Re: 96 bayliner

More likely a restriction in the fuel pickup or a tank venting issue.

Re: 96 bayliner

Have you replaced any of the ignition parts (spark plugs, distributor cap, etc.)?

Re: 96 bayliner

1st is a card'd 4bbl if so:
Need to eliminate the easy things. A fuel problem or ignition problem. Next time it starts to bogs at WOT or on plane kill the engine right then. Come to a stop and then pull the flame arrestor off the carb and pump the accelerator pump a few times and see if streams of fuel are shot into the primaries if so I would say you have a ignition problem as the fuel bowl then would have fuel.

Also check the secondary butterflies make sure they are not stuck closed. They should be able to pushed open easily with pinky finger. With flame arrestor off try getting on plane and watch the secondaries open if they open and they should around 3,500 RPM. At WOT the butterflies should be wide open. I had the porblem I would try to go to WOT and get to 4,200 and the RPM would drop to 3,800 turns out the secondary butterflies were only opening half way and causing a popping when trying to get WOT.

Check timing, plugs, cap and rotor for excessive wear and plug gap. Check choke operating right. Many others things to check but Check before you start throwing parts at it unless you have mucho dinero I know I do not.
