Hey all,

Been gone for a while and replaced my '94 Johnny 120 w/ a new to me '96 Rude 130. All your previous help has been very much appreciated and the wealth of information available here is priceless. I spent some time searching previous posts and have not found answers to ther following items:

#1) Last few times on start up after sitting from 7-10 days, was very hard starting and when it would finally catch, would smoke like a freight train for a couple minutes. Starts good the rest of the day and on subsequent days, but if allowed to sit, the trouble returns.
I replaced a leaky primer valve and at that time I noticed the fuel line was slugged with oil. It took several pumps on the bulb to clear the line and when I tried to start it and check for leaks it popped right off with no hesitation or smoke. I'm wondering if oil infiltrating back into the fuel line is normal (I suspect not) and what might be causing that? A failed check valve somewhere or the OMS going south? Any suggestions are more than welcome.

#2) When I wiped out the engine case from the mess from the leaky primer valve, I came across a small white plastic ball 5/16" dia. rolling around in the bottom. Is this something that belongs somewhere else (duh?) or is it something that is from somewhere previous to my ownership that is unrelated to the operation of the motor? Again, any speculations............

#3) When I started the motor up to check for leaks from the primer valve and fuel filter replacement, I also noticed that the port side was running hot. So hot I could not comfortably keep my hand on the heads for even a short time. The other side was running almost cool. There, has never been an o-heat alarm, so........... is this a thermostat problem, does that side normally run hot, or might the water jacket be obstructed somehow (and how can I determine that?). If I replace that t-stat, am I best off doing the other side right away as well (I'll guess yes)?

#4) Last issue(s). I often run when the temps are very cold, sub freezing on occasions. Twice last year I got a low oil alarm at extended idle but it quit when I increased the RPMs. Is this a common occurrance with this oil delivery system or is my OMS have issues? If this is "normal", can the oil be safely "thinned" for better delivery at these cold temps? Also with this, is there best way to drain the water from the cooling system overnight so it doesn't freeze and create problems the following day? I have been lowering the motor, letting it drain, raising it, letting that drain, lowering it one more time and letting that drain before I raise it to trailer. I have once had a problem with water not wanting to pump until it unfroze from wherever it got stuck and even that made me nervous.

Thanks for any suggestions and a great place to come for reliable information!

/m

Sounds like your t stat is failing. When was the last time the impellar was changed, since this is a new motor to you, probably a good idea to change it. While the lu is down, remove the t stat and blast compressed air up the water line. This will tell you if there is any debris in the water line. Replace taht t stat and gasket then do the other side. Make sure the rubber grommet on the impellar housing fits nicely over the water line when re installing.

Thanks, High Trim. Water pump replacement is on the very short list(this week), because I don't know the history. I'll apply some compressed air then and see what blows......

Still looking for ideas on oil working it's way up the fuel line. In a week its so bad that the fuel filter is filled with more oil than gas. At least I've had enough battery to keep cranking until I get to the good stuff. I just know it's not right.

Thanks

/mike
