1996 Evinrude 225 V-6. Engine has trouble starting. It idles too low and stalls if RPMs not increased. When the engine is placed in gear the RPMs are limitted to 2000, if throttle is advanced further fuel is added with no increase in RPM and the engine floods and soon after dies.

Have read other posts that a tune up and a "link and synch" may solve the problem.

Steve

Re: '96 Evinrude craps out

It really could be so many different things, even more than one issue.

That being said.

I'd suggest you make sure there's no water that's gotten into the fuel system.

Make sure the fitting(s) at any fuel connections aren't leaking air in rather than pulling gas from the tank.
(pump the prime bulb while acting up to test)

Make sure there are no alarms sounding or set that might lower the operating range.

do a plug change while making note of plug condition as related to the cylinder it was from.

Do a compression check while you cahnge the plugs.

Look around under the hood for loose wires and such.

Check back with us and let us know what you find.

evinrudeguy,
Are you priming the fuel bulb before attempting to start?Check the primer solenoid with the red arrow and make sure it is pointing down.Check the timing advance linkage under the flywheel to make sure it is not dis-connected.Sounds like timing may not be advancing.Link and sync is good idea.
