I have had a 96 Force 120HP motor since November of last year. It has always run perfectly in the upper end of the recommended WOT range of 4750-5250 RPMs. The past 2-3 times I've taken it out, it will only get to about 4500 RPMs and there is definite loss of speed. Now, I have done some work on it recently. I had to replace the shift cable. I also did disconnect the throttle cable because I had problems with it after I had put the control box back in. Could I have accidentally adjusted the throttle cable either at the engine or the control box? Any other ideas?

It's possible that by fiddling with throttle cables you have reset the throttle and/or timing. First thing you want to check is the throttle valves, make sure at WOT throttle setting they are horizontal. If they do not fully open or open past 90 degrees your WOT RPM will be limited. Also, timing may be slightly retarded which will cause reduced HP at WOT.

The best thing to do is perform full link-n-sync procedure that will ensure your throttle and timing is properly set. I have been battling similar problem recently and have discovered a lot of great info in this forum. Just do a search and you'll find plenty of posts regarding this issue.

Thanks! Haven't really got a chance to look at it yet and I am pretty new to working on motors. I have just looked at some diagrams online. Is the throttle valve the same thing as the shutter?
