OK, I have a 96 "Force by Mercury" 75 hp outboard. Runs great yada yada. HOWEVER, I am greatly confused when it comes down to tracking down parts for this motor (yes, I've read up on the history of Force/Mercury motors).

For example:

Champion shows that plugs for a 96 75hp Force is #5898, while plugs for a Mercury of the same year and hp is #5838.

Also, NGK shows it's plug for the same Force motor is BUZHW while the Mercury number is BUHW-2.

I just want to keep up with preventative maintanance (spark plugs, impellers, etc.) What do I reference when it comes to finding parts for this motor?

-Jon

PS. I entered the motor serial # at Mercurypartsexpress.com and the site comes back with something about motors of that year no longer being covered.

I would stick to the Force part numbers. If im right even though its made by Mercury thay are different outboards.

Re: Spark Plug and Other Parts Confusion

Thanks guys. Finally found a site that shows a fairly complete parts diagram for my motor:

http://www.dougrussell.com/partscat...action=serials&colid=06&coldesc=75 H.P. (1996)

A lot of the other sites seem to have an overlap of parts between the two makes or lean more towards the Mercury side of things. At least the above site actually looks like my motor and lists the part #s.

Now back to plugs. Going with Force numbers, I was only able to find NGK BUHW-2 and BUHW plugs locally and not BUZHW. Is there really that much difference in the 3 types of plugs or is it imperative that I go with the BUZHW? I know that the BUZHW plug is a resister type plug but I'm not running any delicate electronics.

Thanks!

Re: 96 Force 75hp Spark Plug and Other Parts Confusion

Just in from the NGK rep for anyone else confused by NGK plug numbers for a 96 Force - 75hp:

"Hello Jon,

I took another look at the application for your Force engine and we do list BUZHW stock no. 2147. All plugs are similar in design. BUZHW is an inductive resistor type spark plug which is important on engines using Capacitive Discharge Ignition systems (CDI).

The specs on the other plugs recommended to you are:

BUHW- Same as BUZHW without the inductive resistor

BUHW-2- Same as BUHW with a larger distance or gap between the center electrode and the outer ring of the thread shell where the plug will fire to."
