tach does not work properly, shows 500 rpm all the time. engine off, volt meter on battery reads 12 volts, with engine idling, volt meter on battery reads 12.5 volts. idle it up and volt meter reads 13 volts. appears alternator is working. do I have a rectifier problem or do I buy a new tach and see if that works.

Remove the cover over rectifier and test for voltage on the grey(tach) wire when running, if you do not have 5 or more volts at 1200rpm the tach side of rectifier has failed..

thanks for the help, as soon as I figure out where that is, I'll check. i hooked up another tach I found, does not work either so its probably the rectifier/regulator. any idea where i could find a photo of this on the internet? i can find exploded diagrams, but I need a photo.

never mind, found it. Is replacing as simple as removing 4 bolts, gasket, connectors - insert new in reverse order? seems very simple and not worth $500 shop charges.
