In the past I have posted many times about my "ventilated" block (i.e. holes in the block) that has recently been replaced with a re-manned powerhead.. This thing is a beauty!!! I have never heard a 2-stroke as quiet and responsive, especially after 12 years of my old engine..
My issue is, and I never considered it, is when we went for the first break in run of 1 hour, we backed away from the dock (Charleston SC) with a current moving at a good 6kts... No problem, been there and done that 100 times.. It was Labor Day weekend Sunday at high noon, the place was packed, boats everywhere including DNR at the ramp and on boats, Sheriffs boats and the USCG. We backed out of the landing into the madness and yep NO FORWARD GEAR!! I'd like to tell you that I was embarrassed but I was to busy at the time.. We ended up drifting about 100yds down river before we reversed ALL the way back to the landing.. Of course DNR came along side with a weird look on their faces and laughed as they pulled away..
Now to my questions, after admitting my embarrassment:
1. If I only replaced the powerhead, how did my transmission linkage get out of check?? I adjusted and adjusted and cannot make forward gear and reverse gear work at the same time.. I can get one or the other but not both.. I didn't have this problem before the powerhead replacement... Should I be checking the lower unit oil?
2. The engine runs like a dream at all power settings, except of 3900-4100rpms... It sounds like a moderate "bang ruuuuuuuuun bang ruuuuuuun bang" miss-fire but still chugs along and stays on plane.. Only in that RPM range, otherwise it runs perfect.. Idle and WOT it sounds like a dream..
3.There is a small round something or other on the starboard side of the engine at the bottom of the engine block, actually on the upper part of the lower shaft case below the engine block by about 1 inch... It is sealed off with a rubber plug and heavily corroded.. Was this a water temperature gauge or a water pressure gauge?
Thanks again in advance for any info...
