96 Merc 250 -- minimum octane rating 87 / 89 / 93?

Recently purchased a used 96 Merc 250 outboard and was wondering what octane gas I should be using in it?<br /><br />Appreciate your advice.............Seaclor

JB.....thanks for the octane advise. Quick question, seems like my 260 merc outboard is getting around a mile a gallon, does that seem right....its pushing a Sea Ray Laguna 24.5?<br /><br />Appreciate your advise......Seaclor

Is that motor an XB motor? If so I believe it runs on the higher octane fuels.<br />Theoretically a motor will use 10% of rated hp in fuel at WOT per hour. So 10% of 250 is 25= about 25gph fuel consumption.
