power trim has worked fine up until now raised unit all the way up then would not go back down I could hear the switch/relay working at the pump after 6 or 7 tries the pump started working again. has been ok since my concern is that this is the start of a real problem with the unit . any suggestions?

How big of a job is it to replace the brushes in the pump motor?when I tap on the motor in the up or down mode the pump starts running until next time .Do I have to pull the entire power trim pump to replace the brushes?

The parts are replaceable, rather you can do it or not depends on your skills. The problem is probably more than just worn out brushes. Most likely water corrosion.
Here is the section from the manual on the trim pump motor http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14a5.pdf

Do I have to pull the entire power trim pump to replace the brushes?
If you have to ask that question, changing the brushes in the motor is probably a bit much for you to tackle.
