Hello,
Thank you in advance for your help. I've learned a lot on this forum for the last few years and it has been very helpful.
I have a 1996 Mercury 40hp 4 cylinder ELPTO. I bought it used this year and am still learning about the motor. I replaced the impeller 2 months ago.
I ran it this week on the pontoon and hit a some sand with it. About 15 minn later trolling slowly around the lake the over heat alarm (Beep continousor BEEEEEP) went off at the controls.
I took off the oil tank and later learned this alarm is usually a beep-pause-beep-pause- beep.I disconnected the sensor wire at the head(tan blue) and it still goes off. I also disconnect both blue wires to the low oil sensor and it coninues to go off. At this point I doubt hitting the sand has anything to do with it. The tell tale pee is still strong and the motor starts right up but the alarm goes off on a totally cold motor.
From what I've read it's the overheat sensor but the alarm should turn off if I disconnect the tan blue wire. So I'm starting to belive it's maybe a problem in the controls???
I ordered a service manual but it could take up to 2 weeks. It was 98 degrees and humid today and I
d really like to get back on the waterso thought I would try you guys for ideas. It's humid here!!
