Kind of a newbie to outboards, but have done my share of wrench turning on other stuff...

New to me '97 Merc 15 HP 2 cycle. Been sitting awhile, so had to go through a few things. Fresh fuel, replaced the fuel line/bulb as it was pretty cruddy and seemed to be pumping shellac-like crud in to the filter bowl. Got the motor running, and it runs ok once it warms up, idles nicely. But seems to have a fuel delivery problem. Occasionally it'll jut die when idling, with a shot on the primer it'll start right back up and be fine. But the biggest problem is trying to come off idle up to running speed. most of the time it'll bog like it's starving for fuel. If you can get it past this point it'll run fine, plenty of power, good responsive. I did find out on a test run that if I give the fuel line bulb a good squeeze when I'm trying to come up off idle it'll usually do the trick, again. once the RPMs are up above say 2000 it runs fine.

I've got the service manual for it, have checked the float level, that seems fine. Cleaned out the carb best I could while I had it apart, seemed a little better after that, but not a lot better. There was some of that shellac crud in the carb, but just bits of it here and there. A friend who has some experience mentioned idle settings being important to the idle-to-running transition, maybe an adjustment there? Myself, at this point I'm thinking maybe fuel pump?

replace fuel filter. clean out gas tank. good carb cleaning needed - could be the varnish everywhere. get some seaform spray. blow out as much as possible with compressed air. disassemble carb to clean it. after all cleaned and put back together, on running you may want to open up the low speed idle 1/4 turn at a time. the gas line itself could also have crud in it.

quicktach - did everything you suggested except replace the fuel filter, but it got a good cleaning and looks ok. Carb has been apart and cleaned, carb cleaner and lots of compressed air. Fresh gas in a clean tank. Fuel line/bulb replaced.

I'll give the idle mixture adjustment a try.

I also located a new fuel pump diaphragm, I'll install that and see if that improved things. If it doesn't I think a full carb rebuild after a soak in the carb cleaner tank is in order.

Thanks...
