Was greeted yesterday by a fairly large puddle of "black goo" on the top of the vent plate. Leaked out of the joint between the mid section and the lower unit.

Black goo at the prop isn't abnormal after idling for a while, but the presence of it on the vent plate is of concern. Seems to be more water coming from the joint than than normal to as well.

A compromised exhaust housing gasket?

Perhaps I knocked a seal(s) out of place when I changed the water pump last fall.

Any other ideas?

Exhaust is probably supposed to come out that joint. My '98 Johnny has slots there.

The exhaust housing can fall out, if the gearcase is removed, but not if it is installed. The lower exhaust gasket could leak, but the "goo" (and cooling water)would need to travel uphill when the motor is run on a flusher.

It isn't gear oil, right?

I have slots...just don't remember goo leaking goo there.

Not LU oil. Definitively that carbon black, oil /gas mixture.

Running off the flush port if that matters.
