I got an aftermarket water pump kit and it appears the housing is slightly higher and the rubber grommet that went ontop of the housing doesn't fit now. did they update the design to not need the grommet? concerned about a good seal from the housing to where it mates with upper half of motor wondering if anyone has encountered this.

thanks

Please post your model number and the part number of the water pump kit. In 1997 the 25 was offered in two styles the first was twin cylinder and the other was a compact triple. The triple used a completely different lower unit and very few parts were interchangeable between the two different styles.

The grommet is required however you ordered the wrong kit. The BRP kit is 0437907 - WATER PUMP KIT there is no aftermarket kit available for your engine. The sierra kit you ordered is for the twin cylinder 25 horse. I don't know differences between the two kits. However if you still have all of your original parts you can just swap out the impeller from the new kit with what was in the engine. The impellers are the same.
