having some running issues with my 40hp force power series (by mercury)

compression is good, fuel good, plugs wires and coil packs are good, bulb nice and firm, i have adjusted the air/fuel mix to the best of my ability, fuel filter passed the blow through easily and i have tried some seafoam.

the only thing i dont really know how to check is that if the tank is venting properly. any advice on this? i did remove fuel cap and run and it didnt change a thing.

what it does is: hard starts-i normally have to choke it and put it in neutral and give it gas to get it to start. the firat start of the day is the worst. it usually takes a few cranks. this can be a pain at times but is not the main issue.

i am having surging and rough running. in all ranges of throttle it has frequent surging. not major surging but enough to feel it. also, it will start rough running/sputtering for a few seconds (10 or so) and then smooth out again for a few seconds then rough again and so forth. it does it both cold start and warm but seems a bit worse once warmed up. when throttle is wide open i can def tell that there is not quite as much power as there once was. i think mainly because it is studdering and surging so much.

i am thinking that it is in the carb but wanted to see if you guys agree or if it still could be something else like the stator, fuel pump or something. if you do think carb...which part of the carb specifically would cause these symptoms?

any thoughts?

Carb, Clean it and reset the float level.

Check the fuel recirculation/ drain system.

Are you using the correct sparkplugs?

Re: 97 40 hp force/tracker surging

It is a series of drains, check valves, and hoses, that collect the unburnt/excess fuel from the powerhead, and route it back to the intake or fuel pump to be recycled. They can get clogged up, not allowing the excess fuel to be drained, causing kind of a half flooded condition.

Has its greatest (most noticeable) effect at idle or low rpm speeds, or when accelerating after a period of low rpm.

See the top drawing, numbers 1-6.
