I have a 1997 90hp Johnson motor that when it is hot outside and it is in the down position I can raise it but then it won't go back down. It happened one day last year and now yesterday it did it again. I just checked it this morning and it worked fine, both up and down. My thinking is that it is probably related to something with the fluid. I checked the fluid level last year and it seemed to be full but I'm not sure I checked it exactly the right way. Is there any other thing that it could be? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

I have 3 switches that control the motor. One on the motor one at the controls and one on the bow. When the buttons are pushed the tilt motor runs from all 3 controls but the motor will only raise. The tilt motor runs when in the down position but the motor does not lower.

Top up fluid level.------Or possibly a sticky valve assembly in hydraulic circuit.

Is there a proper procedure to topping off the fluid? Like motor in the down position or up position?

So yesterday I checked the hydraulic fluid level by putting the motor all of the way up flipping the stop bracket so it couldn't go back to the down position. Not that it showed any amount of settling. I removed the fill plug and oil ran out of the opening, so it seems as though it is full. Do you know if there is a way to drain the system and refill it with new oil? I couldn't see any type of drain plug.

You might let the engine set in the up position for 30 min. You need to let the bubbles in the PTT fluid escape, before it can be refilled w/o air in the system.

no expert on T&T sticky valves but if you can drain the thing...... me...only me... I would load it up with WD40 and try to cycle it a few times .... drain and refill with T&T oil. retest
