When the car is cold and not moving I smell gas from the vents if I let the car sit a long time this smell gets strong. I just changed the fuel pressure regulator thinking that was the problem but it made it better but still seem to smell it when the car has been sitting for the night. I think that i see a wet injector but I cannot be sure. I think im going to change that injector that looks like it is wet at the top. I am thinking though that there are o rings for the injectors that might be whats going on. but if that was it would not i see it? Also when I open the gas tank there is a crazy amount of pressure in there! I think that it has something to do with when i open the gas cap and there is so much pressure sometimes I think its going to kick the cap out of my hand! So is that the evap canister? In my car that is in front of my front right wheel. I have the 2.2 vin4 motor. Anyways any help would be a big help! I dont have much money but can do the labor myself!!!!

It's possible evap can is overloading ...filter replace if you can on that model or a split vac hose ;metal tube to gas tank.....could be if car runs well otherwise....injector leaking should cause hard starts or lean fuel delivery running rough

interesting. This is happening on an old 95 Chevy Tahoe that I have.

When I get near the rear of the truck when the tank is more than 1/2 full I can smell gas. So do you think this smell is the canister as well?

Re: 97 cavalier gas smell inside the cab

thanks for hyjacking my problem. Anyways I noticed late yesterday and today since I replaced the fuel pressure regulator that when I go to start the car It does not start right up after 3 cranks like id did before. It starts but sometimes I have to crank a couple times longer than before and I think that if I tap the gas pedal It helps it start. That was not so before I replaced the fuel pressure regulator. hopefully this helps narrow the problem for someone that might know this problem. Thanks in advance!

Yup if it is a cranking thing I would "suspect" a possible fuel line problem...........The regulator is a good start hut the cheap metal lines near the tank seem to love to rust through. Look for dampness near the fuel tank too.

I just fixed a similar problem with my son's trailblazer and it was a line leak...... we suffer allot of rust here in VT..... We ended up using PC-11 epoxy to repair the line.

if a fuel line leak would not the pressure be less than strong? when I open the gas cap there is more pressure than im sure there is supposed to be. I am going to spend the upcoming 4 day weekend trying to tackle the problem but I really hope to have a good lead to pursue. I was thinking that maybee it is the evap canaster or the valve that controlls it. Not sure But I will try to explore everything. I have noticed that there is a lot of rust on the underpart of this car compared to other cars I have owned or worked on with similar miles and year. I guess they must have not used any spray protection for rust or cheap metal when this car was made.

check your fuel filter, line connection or plastic lock other end sometimes lock gets funky leaks gas...lock is replaceable......your just going to have to get under and check for leaks.....put oil around the suspect injector there are o-rings that can leak ......we seem to assume you have no floor holes eh
