Hello everyone. I am new to boating and have been given 97 Chris Craft Sea Skiff 20 dual console w/ '97 Evinrude 150 Ocean Pro. No hour meter but I know the history and the hours are fairly low for it's age. Just put her in the water yesterday and went for a shakedown cruise. Details:

Started up fine by squeezing bulb till hard. Key to "on", 2 pushes on the choke button, throttle at idle.

Idled out-fairly long no wake zone (1 mile). Motored up and ran for about 5-6 miles at 4400-5000 rpm. Perfect.

Motored down and during no wake trip back to port (1 mile), started to excessively (A LOT) smoke in my opinion. Occasional "cough" but kept running. Upon docking started to stall numerous times. After docking, could not get to restart. I think I might have flooded it. Changed plugs at that time for the new season. Old plugs looked good but there was wet fuel on them. Got to start but would not stay lit by having throttle wide open then backing off when it caught. Huge amounts of smoke.

Oil-Penzoil TCW-3 syn. blend. Fresh gas in tank. Messed with red knob near fuel/oil pump on front of engine. Not sure where it was originally because the other person I was with turned it before I got a refrence as to where it was.

Question: What is this red knob and where should it be?

I will be going back at lunch today to see if it will start after sitting overnight.

Water temp was 48. Could excessive smoking on way back to port be due to cold water and thermostats operation causing rich operation?

Not related but lower unit was replaced last year. Runs 40 mph w/16 pitch prop. I have a 19 pitch but feel the lower pitch better to have rpm's a little higher for expected idling time while trolling. I don't need to go any faster at WOT.

Thanks in advance for all your advice.

your motor does not have a choke, like the older motors, it has a primer solenoid, that shoots fuel directly into the intake. the solenoid with the red handle is the primer, below is a picture of the running postion, the red know is to manually prime the motor, if the solenoid fails, turn knob 90* you are right it probably flooded. also read the links.

Thanks Tashasdaddy. I wish all problems were this easy. I moved the red lever to the proper position and after an overnight rest the flooding cleared and she started right up. I can hear/see the difference of moving the lever. Definitly gets too rich when put to where it was and runs fine (idle) when set correct. True test will be next time out. Weather bad today. Thanks again.

UB - Your starting procedure is nearly correct. For cold start, pump primer bulb till hard. Throttle in neutral (no advance), push in key and hold in while cranking motor. Release key when it starts. If motor dies, repeat again. Let motor warm up until idle slows to ~850-900RPM. The motor's QuickStart feature eliminates the need to advance throttle for cold start.

Warm start, just turn key, no throttle advance, wait until idle drops to 850-900RPM, then shift into gear. QuickStart is active on warm startups, for 5 sec.

BTW - Prop has correct pitch when motor will rev up to max RPM range at full throttle. Any other prop pitch may damage motor due to overrevving or lugging.
