I have tried everything I know of to get my 97 Evinrude Ficht to run better, except buy an update kit. Why the original owner did not have one installed under warranty I do not know, but I am stuck with the "Ficht Bug". I change the spark plugs about every 3rd trip, and clean them to keep the carbon from building on them, have started using Royal Purple TCW3 Synthetic Outboard Oil. Nothing I do really helps for any extended period. Is it worh my time to put an update kit on this motor or should I just start looking for another motor?

The 97 FICHTS did not have a factory warranty update kit like the '98 and '99s did.

What number plug are you using?

What is the temperature of each cylinder head at idle?

Does any plug have more carbon buildup than others? If so, which one?

All of the plugs are building carbon on them, but the middle plug on the starbord side of the boat is the main plug that is trying to foul. I heard a tip form a man at a marine shop yesteday about the plugs. He said to turn the posts on the plugs toward the injectors, so the fuel would not spray directly on the plug.
As far as temperatures on the injectors, I have never checked them.

If a pulse line from the oil pump or the fuel (lift) pump connects to #3 cylinder, the fouling may be due to a torn diaphragm. Pull a pulse line after running the motor and see if there is any oil of fuel in it.

A cold running motor will foul plugs also, that is why I asked what the the CYLINDER HEAD temperature.

If you are using the Champion 7712 plugs, I've had good results with their QC12PEP that is used on the 200-225-250 FICHTS.
