1997 Evinrude Intruder 115. The motor won't be able to get up on plane without pumping the bulb. If bulb isn't pumped and the throttle is pushed down, the motor just grumbles and dies. It does plane out nicely if bulb is pumped until hard. Once on plane, the boat will surge, slow down then die. The fuel pump was replaced 3-4 years ago, could it be bad already? The fuel line seems to be fine. What could the problem be? I've sworn to stop putting $$$ into this motor so I'd be doing this myself. I've not worked on motors but I am pretty handy. Any tips, comments, help much appreciated!

to eliminate the fuel system as the problem you can try running it on a portable tank with new line and bulb.

check water seperator.

check fuel in tank for water.

use a flashlight, pump bulb firm and look for leaks under the cowl.

Thanks much for the reply. I will check on the those points. If not any of the above, what's my next step?

What other options are there besides the fuel system? Carbs?

Interesting, this is the exact story I just heard from a friend with a 1997 Ficht Intruder.

Francis of Guy Marine found the problem - a torn fuel pump diaphram. He showed it to me, it was pretty big, and a light blue color.

Replaced that, and it's run fine ever since. Hope this helps!

Fuel pump or vacuum leak in fuel filter or fuel bracket.,more likely VRO/OMS due to ethanol fuel. I replace at least 1 a week and all have the same problem, the flapper check valve diaphram is swollen twice it normal size and its a tan material. Let it lay out for a couple of day and it will return to normal size...
