Okay helping a friend with his new boat..tach does not work.. I had a sahara sitting around I knew worked so we hooked it up and nothing. The gauge DOES have power...it zeros out when you turn the key on...just nothing from the engine...start it and still sets at zero. The engine was recently rebuilt and the previous owner says they might not have hooked the sender back up. Where is the sender located?? The harness and all looks good. Any thoughts or photos would be greatly appreciated!! thanks! oh yeah boat is a 97 procraft 180

You’ll have to refer to the manual to check the signal source. The signal is a pulse-positive output that’s provided directly from the stator assembly through the rectifier. A peak-reading voltmeter set to “positive” and the lowest volt scale will enable you to read any voltage output (on this circuit) from the stator.

Check the procedure and specifications for your engine, since the inspection point, procedure and wiring are not the same for all outboards. In addition, your ohmmeter can be used to check the continuity of the stator windings, as well as the integrity of the rectifier diodes.

If everything still checks out, you will need to test your rectifier/regulator as per your manual. This is what I feel is your problem due to the fact that the tach will zero then nothing. The following links will help.
