Got back from an afternoon of fishing and as I pulled up to the ramp, suddenly my tilt/trim wouldn't work either direction. After trailering the boat I had to get the assistance of a very nice man to help me lift it up with the manual release. The relays are only 6 months old because I had a problem earlier with them. I can hear the relays clicking when I tap the buttons. Where should I start?

Find the green and blue wires coming from thr t/t mtr to a connector. Seperate it and use some jumper wires to the wires in the connector going to the mtr. Put blue on positive from your battery and green on negative and see if it goes up. Reverse for down. If it works you have other probs in your wiring.

My wires go into a relay then to connectors I believe. I jumped the the "up" relay and all I got was a nice spark.

I got out the test light and poked the big green wire and pushed the down button. Light came on, motor did nothing. Am I safe to assume that the motor is getting fire?

Re: 97 Johnson 115 Fast Strike Tilt and Trim

I checked all the electrical stuff that I could find and everything checked out. Via my Dad's instruction, I firmly whopped the trim motor with a pair of pliers while holding the Up button. Up she went. I went up then down then up then down then it stopped working again. Tapped it once more and it worked for about a half an inch then stopped again. So, shall I conclude that there's a dead spot in the motor or brush has gone bad? Time to buy a new trim motor?

You've got a stuck brush in your t/t mtr. You can either take it to a rebuild shop to get it repaired or get a rebuilt or new mtr.
