Friend of mine and I were out on the lake today. His engine (just purchased a couple months ago) started and ran fine. Ran well at WOT but dropped down to under 2000 rpms. He took it out of gear, revved it up a few times and then took off again, to which said engine ran fine for about 3 or 4 minutes then repeated earlier actions. I'm not a master mechanic but an outboard enthusiast. Me thinks it could have something to do with his carbs. Priming the bulb when it begins to act up does nothing. What do you guys think? You would certainly know better than I. Looking forward to your response.

Re: '97 Johnson 130

Almost sounds like the engine is overheating and going into the S.L.O.W. mode. This limits the rpms in case of an overheat.Of course if his alarm didn't sound I can't be sure.

Another possibility is that the fuel tank is not venting properly or the fuel tank anti-syphon valve is defective causing enough restriction as to not deliver adequate fuel volume when up to speed.

Did the primer bulb ever colapse or seem soft during the engine problem?

Wonder if he could get the engine to pickup by bumping the primer button. This would indicate restricted carbs by letting fuel flow into intake chamber past carbs ,however since it ran for 3-4 minutes at wot I have doubts.
