I have a 97 Johnson Ocean Runner that stalled and the Check Engine Light Flashed-on when running this weekend. I ran the boat for about 1.5 hours in the ICW at about 80% to WOT. It ran great. And then...

Then it spit and sputtered, the check engine light popped on and it stalled. It re-cranked, got up to about 4000 rpms and sputtered and the check engine light popped on again. I was able to limp her in at about 12-1400 rpms at 5 knots. I tried to push her to 3000 rpm and the same problem repeated. The primer bulb was soft when this took place. Usually its firm. This occurred with approximately 1/4 tank of gas lieft in the tank.

My thought is that i have a clogged fuel line or filter. Any thoughts or advice would be helpful. If it is a fuel line/filer problem, how do I go about replacing those?

Thanks

Mike, Check Engine alarm is due to a vacuum in the fuel line. I would check antisiphon valve in the fuel pickup in the main fuel tank. The get full of junk, and stick shut. They also sometimes have fuel screens that get fouled. I ended up removing mine.

If that is not it, check the fuel line connections and fuel filters (especially the main fuel strainer on the engine) for clogs or air leaks.

Thanks Chris,

I need a little direction on the anti siphon valve. Locating, disassembling, cleaning and replacing. Is it inside the tank? Another question - where do I find the fuel filters- especially the main fuel strainer on the engine?

Thanks

The Antisiphon valve is usually on or in the fuel pickup tube on the built in tank. It is either screwed into the fuel pickup elbow, or perhaps under the fuel pickup tube itself. On my seaRay (don't know what brand fuel tank), the fuel pickup tube unscrewed from the elbow. The A-S valve is usually a spring and a steel ball. It may have a fuel screen.

The main fuel strainer on my '98 Johnny 150HPV6 is a white fitting under the air box. The gasoline line runs directly to it, and it unscrews. There is a gasket and an oring (I think), which seal it.

Your boat may have a water seperating fuel filter as well. Look for a oil filter shaped canister in the bilge or under the gunwale. You can find it by tracing the fuel line from engine to tank.

Thanks for the help. I am going to try and tackle it this weekend. Starting with the AS valve.
