Hello! Someone in a similar norwegian forum pointed me to you guys, so maybe you can help out.

Apologies in advance for a "wall of text" so just to clarify right away, my 97 60hp Mercury 3cyl 2 stroke engine gives no spark and will not ignite.

Back story: I bought the boat and engine this spring. When we put it on the water, it started right away. Ran about 3-4 gas tanks with no issues.

On about the 4th gas tank i noticed that it sometimes became harder to start. After giving it a break from trying and pumping the gas bulb until hard, it would fire back up.

After a weekend of lots of use, myself and a co-worker tried to start it. This time however, it simply would not start. I tried coming back the next day, with similar results. Figured it could be the sparks, so decided to replace those, which started a long trail of different ideas and stuff i've tried to no avail.

What I have to mention, that somewhere in the middle of the list of things i've done below, i called a mechanic to look at it. When he came he told me to try to start it, without doing anything. It started on the first try. I ran it for about 40 minutes, turned it off, and haven't been able to turn it back on again.

Things i've tried:

- Checked & Re-checked dead man switch on console
- Replace spark plugs
- Open & Check carburettor, seem fine
- Replace fuel filter
- Check all tubes and all wires for anything visibly wrong
(this is where the engine suddenly started and died again)
- Replaced power pack
- Checked resistance on the three coils individually (all within 939 - 951 @ 2000 / 0.8, 0.7, 0.9 ohm)
- Checked resistance on stator (669 @ 2000)

Things i've thought about but don't know how to do:
- Check trigger? Could this be it?
- Try to disable dead mans switch on the engine itself? Can this even be done?
- I've also heard or read about a quick silver switch or something, which is there to prevent engine start in wrong position? Don't know anything else, or where it is or how to disable it.

Any tips or hints would be greatly appreciated. We bought this boat to spend time with the kids at sea instead of vacationing due to the pandemic, and all we've had are engine troubles!

All the best,
Midnatt
