Hello,

My block recently cracked on my volvo penta 5.7GL PLKD engine... yes i was a smart guy and forgot to drain my block in a cold climate....

Anyways i have been searching for a short block on ebay and other places. I found this puppy on ebay Engine. Would this short block work for my engine to get it back up and going? Or is this the one i need? Engine What is the difference between the two besides the years?

Royally Confused

Re: 97 Reinell Volvo Penta Cracked Block

So, I just got off the phone with the company that i will be buying my Short Block from. MABBCO Enterprises The way to tell on my engine what one i need for a block is by the casting number, which mine is 880. Which also means it is a Vortec engine, but on an older style, because it does have the 12 bolts on the intake manifold.

Talking with them, and this is purely for people who might end up in my situation, to get a proper call on your engine to replace it with a new short block, you need to know the following info:
  • Casting Number on Block
  • Casting Number on Head Cylinder (to know which gaskets to get)
  • Whether your timing cover is plastic. If it is plastic you will need to replace the whole cover because the gasket is part of it.)
  • Whether your lifters are roller or non-roller
  • Does the engine have a mechanical or electric fuel pump?

All these help the place you are getting your block from to know they are giving you the correct block. Again, this is all from my dealings in trying to get a short block for my stupid mistake of cracking the block.

Might want to have your heads looked at. Could be a chance they were cracked by the water too.

Ayuh,... For the 20hp, I'd throw in a new intake, 'n buy a Vortec headed Long Block...
As Rogers says, yer old heads are Suspect to say the least...
