I am looking at a boat with a 1997 150hp fitch Evinrude and my question is how good are these motors? Some things I have read scare me. Should I stay away. Any help would be great.

Thanks Bill :)

Those were the first ones out. They had a recall that had a dozen or so updates. If they've been done, it might be okay. If not, it's scrap waiting to happen. :(

most common problems were computer failure and piston failure. sometimes both at about the same time. even with the updates I dont trust anything made by OMC in the late 90's. to many quality control issues from vendors.

Re: 97 Rude 150

I feel that should be narrowed down to DFIs and some of the other V6 models, but the crossflows of that vintage such as the V4s were still bullet-proof in my mind.
Yes, the V6 Ficht....a problem child.

My thought is that if there was a problem it should have popped up by now.

I'm thinkin' how many problems have been repaired or masked and will continue to plague the future owner? Anyone who considers buying a 1997-1998 v6 FICHT after researching this forum needs to stop by my next garage sale.

Go to the top of this page and click on the red leterred SEARCH feature. Put in 1997 1998 FICHT and wait for all of em to load. Concentrate on the 150 and 175 HP V6 models. It would be very appropriate to tell these horror stories around the outboard fire.....Uh...I mean camp fire!!!
