I'm considering purchasing a 2 door tahoe to pull my 88 four winns horizon 200. I know it's a heavy boat, especially with fuel and gear. Anybody tow with one? How do you like the handling while under tow? Braking?

I had one, mine was a 1996 4 door 4X4, It pulled a 21' Seafox with Tandem MTI trailer with ease! It had the 350 Vortec v-8, It was a good vehicle, never any major problems, sold it when gas went to $4.00 a gallon the first time about 5-6 years ago. The shorter 2 door model would do better backing I believe, but out on the highway I don't know, maybe someone else could answer that part! I can say one thing for sure, it will drink gas, but any gas burner strong enough to do the job would!

The longer the wheelbase the better the tow vehicle. However, Tahoe/Yukons are not lightweights by any means and they two well even though they are shorter than the Suburban stable mates. You won't have an issue.

Love those old 2dr's. Suspension is a tad rougher riding than a 4dr Tahoe, but will still tow plenty. Easily as much as a 1/2 ton pickup.

So, with that said, what can I

Re: 97 tahoe 2 door 4x4

i have a 91 sundowner 225 weighs about 5k or so i pull it with a 95 f 150 5.0l 13.5 mpg normal, 11mpg pulling. if you don't mind pulling trailers it will work great and since its a 97 it has a vortech engine better then the 95 and older. i know some people don't like pulling trailers so they go overkill on a truck then complain on mileage i would say you would be ok with that truck. if your still unsure see if the owner will let you tow it around the block. my guess is your boat would be around the 3500 lbs area maybe 4k full gas tank.

I think my boat is closer to 5k, (from asking on this forum) I tow heavy stuff for work, but usually im in a ford diesel f-550, sounds like the tahoe should do the trick... I'm gonna see it tomorrow and go from there... Thanks shain

Those trucks have plenty of grunt, but the brakes are tiny and the wheel base is short. Ok for small trailers but not much fun with a larger one.

Re: 97 tahoe 2 door 4x4

Hi Guys:

I'm driving my third 2 door Tahoe. The last two have been 2 wheel drive with posi-trac rear ends. I tow a 22 ft heavy boat with no issues at all. If you tow a heavy boat you must expect to pay for gas, there's no way round it! I tried to tow it with my slant six Dodge Ram 150 but it just didn't have the jam so in this case there's no replacement for displacement.

Stop guessing at the weight of you boat.... take it to a truck stop and scale it.... I suspect you will be fine but seriously don't guess.... weigh it

Yeah, correct on going to a scale... It's the only way to know for sure....

Gas mileage on any vehicle will vary depending on who is driving, where the vehicle is being driven, and more importantly, the axle ratios the vehicle has. Then there are those that put monster tires on a vehicle and can't imagine why gas mileage goes down the tube. You are towing a boat. Whether you get 8 - 10 - or 12 is rather unimportant uinless you are traveling a hundred miles or more one way, very frequently. It is simply the cost of boating. An if you think your tow vechicle is a gas hog, it's an economy champ compared to the boat.

are the boats equipped with brakes? If so this would help in the stopping dept.

Re: 97 tahoe 2 door 4x4

Thanks for the simple answer smokeonthewater!! I'm well aware of the conditions of towing, and how each situation/vehicle will produce different mpg's. Since a few people have owned tahoes before, I was just asking for a general mpg.

I thought the anchor was the brake... Actually it would be the e-break!! Lol
