This is a follow-on to my previous post about the circulating hose that blows on my '97 VP 3.0GS. While under warranty (and after blowing the 1st hose), the dealer installed a restrictor in the supply pump inlet hose. I've never been able to find information about this, the dealer went out of business, and other VP shops knew nothing about it.
I checked everything for blockage (riser, manifold, block, head & bellows), and I just confirmed that there is no exhaust/combustion pressure in the cooling system. It always seemed that there was too much water coming in at high RPM.
Today I found some information on the following website:
http://marinemechanic.com/omc/no-4169.htm
which says:
1997 (LK) and Early 1998 (BY) 3.0 Litre
Several issues have come to our attention that affect the running characteristics of certain 3.0 Litre engines.
An update kit has been designed to address these issues. The kit has three functions.
First, it is designed to optimize cooling system water flow.
Second, the kit will eliminate the possibility of a voltage drop in the boat's electrical system, causing the alternator to overcharge the battery.
Third, it will retard the ignition timing and allow the engine to run properly on low octane fuel.
When working on a manual steering engine, order Upgrade Kit, P/N 3858269. All power steering engines require Upgrade Kit, P/N 3858253. These kits can be ordered through your OMC Genuine Parts distributor.
After the work has been performed, submit a warranty allowance request that covers only the installation of the upgrade kit.
The Volvo-Penta website has no information on this, but I did find the specific part numbers on another site: http://www.boatsandiego.com/storefront/Inventory.pdf
3858253
Volvo - impeller kit, field upgrade kit, 3.0L. Volvo

If anyone out there has more info about this band-aid from VP, I would like to know. It didn't fix the problem very well!
