'98 115 SPL Fuel Starving While Planing Out

Am operating a 1998 non-VRO 115 hp Evinrude. Doing a lot of trolling. I keep a close watch for plug fouling and utilize Sea Foam. When I complete my trolling run and attempt to bring it up to plane, it dies about 90% of the time. Have an inboard fuel tank and the hose and fittings appear to be secure. Squeezing the fuel line bulb cures the problem. It seems that, as rpms increase during the planing process, the fuel pump can't keep up. Has anyone else experienced this? By the way...most times this occurs, the bulb does appear empty and the line does require priming. Runs great after a restart and a bulb squeeze or two. Suction leak...worn out pump? Thanks for any advice.

leak, clogged vent on gas tank, weak pump, clogging high speed jets in carb.

May have a vacuum leak between the intake & the fuel pump. Pump may not be stong enough to pump fuel through a partially clogged filter. I had to clean my 20 gallon plastic tank out last year. I could not believe the amount of rust that had accumulated on bottom of the tank. I installed a screw on type filter/water seperator after I got the tank clean.

I also think that you may have an air leak somewhere on your fuel supply. If you temporarily put some clear hose between the fuel pump and carburetors, you will be able to spot the air bubbles if that is the prioblem. You want to fix it if it is the problem because running lean is potentially very destructive.


The fuel pump's only function is to lift the fuel to the float bowl to keep it full. After that the pistons pull the fuel through the carburetors, so it is probably not a question of the fuel pump keeping up with the engine. It could be the floats and float valves need a little TLC.

Thanks to each of you for your prompt replies. I have no idea how to get to my tank without pulling seats, carpeting and flooring. That's why my fuel gauge hasn't been repaired. Will start with a new hose and a six galllon portable tank. Then to your advice. I can't find a fuel filter on this engine. Thanks all...again.

fuel filter is the black part on the fuel pump with the large screw in the middle. if you are running a built in tank without a fuel/water separation filter, you could be getting all kinds of crud in the carbs.
