Seems like it takes 3-5 minutes for the motor to start peein out water in idle or in run from a cold start. Normal? new to the marine motor world, thanks for any help.

Should start in a couple of seconds.

Could be a couple of things.

How long since it has had the water pump serviced? May need a new impeller in the water pump. Usually do this once a season.

Thermostat may be corroded and restricting water to the tell tail.

Water galleries could be blocked with mud or corrosion.

If it is only happening when it is being flushed on a hose it may just be low water pressure from the hose.

Sometimes insects build nests in the tell tail and block the flow of water. Use a thing piece of wire to clean them out.

If the water pump hasn?t been looked at in a while I?d start there. At least you will know that it is pumping water and something else is blocking the water flow.

Good Luck

Just a process of elimination

. Mine does pee within couple of seconds. When I first bought my boat it was sitting for couple of years and it didnt pee from tell tale. it was clogged. I put a coat hanger thru, that way unclogged it.

Remove that small thermostat housing cover where the hose hooks up to. Its secured by 4 number 10 metric bolts then remove the thermostat and test it to see if it works. Boil a pot of water and drop the thermostat in it then watch it open up. If it opens up, put it in a cold cup of water and watch it close. if that checks out ok. Hook up your muffs and turn the water on and watch if water comes out of the thermostat housing. if it does turn the water off quickle before you make a mess. This way you will find out if there are clogging problems in passages. If water comes out its good, put the boat in water and run the engine and test it again. If no water comes out your water pump is out.

Im trying to help you diagnose if your thermostat is operating as it should.

When you motor is a running you should see a small stream of water from the side or back of your outboard that "tells" you that water is circulating through your cooling system.
