98 Evinrude 40 HP charging question

My 98 40 hp 2 stroke with power trim does not seem to be charging the battery.

The engine runs with no battery connected. Does this mean the charging system must be working at some level?

I know from the car world that an engine running, but not charging, that still runs when the battery is disconnected means the regulator needs replacing. Can I make that same assumption with this outboard?

Also, if anyone has a wiring diagram, I'd appreciate it.

If your charging circuit was working, it most likely isn't now. Never run your outboard without the battery connected. The rectifier/regulator is most likely toast now. Your manual will tell you how to test it.

Thanks for the amazingly quick answer.

I understand that running without a battery is problematic. However, since the motor did run without battery, what does that say about the magneto/stator/rectifier?

Agree with Bhile, You have a self contained ignition system on your mtr and it will run all day without the bat cables connected. BUT disconnect the bat cables and you will screw up your charging system on the mtr which you probably have already done. You could have blown the rectifier.
