I changed the LU oil last weekend and noticed a smallish tan fluid patch in it. I changed to HPF-XR last year which is blue, the oil that came out last year was tan. I don't think the oil that came out this year was contaminated with water, it looked more like remnants of the previous brand of oil. there was no oil discoloration at the top plug, it was only revealed when the bottom plug was pulled and it drained first (about 4tbsp) then clean blue gear oil came out.
Anyway, I let it drain for about 2 hrs and then filled it up from the bottom with new HPR-XF. Today, I went fishing. I made a 10 minute run down the lake, fished 4 or 5 hrs, 10 minute run back, then loaded and went home. 1 hour drive home and I see this. I pop the top drain plug and see the lu oil is clearly contaminated.
When Ichanged the LU oil last weekend I put new washers on but to be honest I dont believe the bottom plug was as tight as it was last year because the screw driver kept slipping off, I leaned in to it and got it good but who knows. Based on the short time it was in the water, to be this contaminated could the issue be something as simple as a loose plug? I think if a seal was that bad or damaged there would be other signs? I had ordered new drain plugs but they were allen head and I didnt feel I would be able to get them as tight as I would be able to get the flat heads that were on it already. I hope this rambling story was clear. Any advice? Thanks.
