Hey guys, I got a real problem here, I can not seem to get my motor to idle right.
Here is what i have done so far. Frist the Shaft tower bushings were wore out, so i had to replace those, My shaft tower does not seem right, its not smooth round on the top busings, its like the metal was not poured right. Hard to explain, but its not a perfect circle at the top bushing. So im thinking i need a new tower, a $75 part.
Ok, So I get the new bushings on, and fire up the motor, I notice that the throttle is a bit laggy with the cables, The cables are moving, but there is lag, I turn the spring over one more time, This seems to fix the problem. Now when i pull the throttle cable back, the motor will respond correctly, before, it I would shut off the throttle, it would take a bit for the idle to come down.
Next I set the mixure screw on the carb to 1 turn out from seated. My carb has a plastic white screw on the front top, It was screwed all the way in, so i left it alone. Hook up all the hoses and fired up the motor sitting in a trash can full of water.
Motor fired right up, and i set the idle to 1200 rpms. Works perfect. I then take it to the lake yesterday, and fires up and runs great. However, after i run the motor a bit, the motor will hit 5500rpms. I let off the stick, and now my motor is idleing at 2500 rpms? When i put it in gear it will lower back down. So I take the cover off the motor and reset the idle, back down to 1200 rpms in N. Run the boat, and its back up again. Iv noticed if I leave it there, it will come down, in a couple of mins. I also notice that it runs better with the cover off, when i put the cover on, it actaully lowers the rpms a bit. I turned one of the linkages a half turn, on the carb, to try and get the carb to shut tighter, but it now has a miss in low idle and low speed cruising, but it runs great at anyting above 2000 rpms.
So iv been looking online, and Im thinking its a vac tube problem, or a fuel pump problem somewhere? but Im not sure, I am going to get a timing light and see if its that. I do have a manual, but I really not sure where to start. Any ideas would help.
Thanks
Daryl
