((98' johnson 200 ocean runner)) Just got back from my boat that is currently in the water (57deg water temp). Tried tried tried and tried to start the motor and it wouldnt turn over, So i took out one plug to check for spark, Tried to turn it over to see spark and it fired up. Put the plug back in and it started then stalled and keep starting then stalling after about 10 seconds running each time but finally stayed running (Usually hard to start everytime it sits for more than a week but never had to take out a plug in summer time) It starts and stalls in the summer too but will run fine after 2-3 times ... Why could it be so hard to start in the cooler weather?... I know it will start fine when the motor is not in the water and on muffs even if its dead winter... yes i am pushing in key to choke it--any input would be greatly appreciated

When you have it running push the key in and hold it. If the primer is working the mtr should start to slow down from to much fuel. If you don't see any difference in running, the primer isn't working.

i can definetly tell the difference when pushing it in, it wont start if i dont use it. i tested the solenoid before. it squirts gas when i push. i was reading something before about other people with this issue and their solution was changing powerpack and stator, i dont get why when i pulled a plug it started...

Check your compression and then check your spark with an open air gap spark tester. Should jump a 7/16" air gap.

Re: 98' johnson 200 starting issues

so i finally got the boat home and tested. compression is at 93-96 on every cylinder and spark easily jumps a 5/8 gap. very strong spark.. it will start fine now that its out of the water. but in order to get it started while in water i had to spray some starter fluid through the engine hood opening. it hesitated to start after that but after a few tries it went.. once warm it runs perfect and will restart no problems.. never had any issue during warmer weather

Are your battery connections both at battery and the starter clean and shiny; maybe not enough power to spin the motor when its in the water and has back pressure on the engine.

I know this is old but im just getting the boat ready to go back in and im still having issues with cold starting,i pulled off the small tubes on primer solenoid they squirt out fuel once and thats it i can push in key and hear it click everytime but it wont squirt again unless i pump up primer bulb again to refill it. I have a spare solenoid so i swapped it, same thing.

Try cleaning the nipples the primer hoses connect to.

Pump the primer up until it is real firm. I find that in the colder weather, the quickstart is not enough to keep her running until she warms up, so advance the throttle, hold the primer (or push in the key) and crank her until she starts. The extra throttle advance should help a lot.

Re: 98' johnson 200 starting issues

I have a 99 225, had issues starting mine when I first bought it, came to learn real quick, these motors were a pain not like my yamaha that would start in under 5 sec after sitting for 6 months, there seems to be a certain method of starting these smokers, mine has been pump primer bulb solid, turn ignition to run, push and hold 10 sec, walk back prime bulb again, push and hold key for 10 more sec (the primer solinoid is not a pump I believe it works off the build up of pressure from the fuel pump or primer bulb so it's a one shot deal until primed again) anyway after the second prime, turn the key to start @ idle throttle for 2 sec to pull the primed fuel into the cylinders, then open throttle to 1/2,turn engine over till fires most of the time only 3-5 sec. this has been my method and it always seemed to work well up till recently, but it always to 2 primes to start her! fired my engine last Sat, ran her @ idle for about 15min shut her down attempted to start her again yesterday she would not fire went through 1 battery, pulled a couple of plugs blew them out she fire right up! I'm thinking the 15min Idle run the week prior and the 5 week sit time befor that, she never had the opertunity to clean/dry out her plugs on her own running at only 1kon the muffs, I premix my oil and she is dead on @ 50:1, which may be a little rich for a long idle run. But based on how these bad boys smoke on intial start, I thinking that the fuel may be compressed and atomized but not all the oil is being burnt out! so my thought on this is as for me would be to limit the runnning on Muffs, because you can't rev her high enough to clean her out, never really had much issue untill I started running her on the trailer! this may or may not help, but it's my 2 cents, and I feel your pain Brother!!!! these motors are raped apes when running out, but starting them takes a PhD @ times!

Re: 98' johnson 200 starting issues

Thanks, I'll try cleaning the little nipples(always fun) but anyways ,it never gives me a problem once its warm out. Only cold weather or water. Pain in the arse. Other than this starting problem and fuel guzzling, Its a good motor .. hopefully this is the last season i use this motor, I plan on picking up a 250 E-tec next winter, HOPEFULLY!!
