I have twin '98 Johnson 225s. I bought these motors used a few months ago. The port motor has always been a little cold natured, liked to stall at idle when cold. When it warmed up it was ok.

Today I could not get it to idle for any length of time at all. It starts and runs for 10 or 15 seconds and stalls. Will rev up in nuetral but stalls if I start it, put it in gear and try to throttle up. I changed the fuel water seperators, there was not visible water when I dumped them into a bucket and let it settle. I put a set of plugs in it and it seemed a little better but still will not stay running. I also took off the small fuel filter at the motor, it was clean and no restrictions.

I am going to set up a fuel line to a 5 gal can with a seperate fuel line and see what it does. Anyone have any other suggestions, things to check?

Squeeze the primer bulb to the engine when it tries to stall. Maybe a fuel supply problem.

Just for grins.....take a compression test on all the holes and make sure you got good spark at each cylinder.

Re: '98 Johnson 225 carbed problem

Update, Problem solved!

It was the shift interupt switch. Basicaly the motor was running on 3 cyls.

I started by doing some basic trouble shooting. I hooked up a seperate feul line to a 5 gal can and added some fuel system cleaner, still ran the same.

I pulled all the plugs and did a cpmpression test, ranged from 95 to 110 psi (only 1 cyl was 95, stuck ring maybe?...I will decarb before I haul out and recheck it).

I then did a spark test, port bank ok, good spark jump, starboard side no spark on all 3 cyls. I disconnected the ground wire from the shift interupt switch and spark was restored!

Looked at my watch and it was quarter to 12, raced to the BRP dealer, I figured they were only open till noon, turned out they were open till 1...long story short, I am back on the water for 60 bucks.

Thanks to everyone for the help/suggestions
