Need the model number of engine, some had regulator, some did not. You do have a meter.
What is the voltage at the battery at 3500 rpms?

my model has a rectifier/regulator...looks like its one unit according to the parts diagram. i cant check the voltage till i can get it in the water on tuesday... my guess is its def overcharging.. both of these batts are good and they were both boiling over.... so if its actually overcharging... is the rectifier/regulater my problem??

If it is overcharging, the VR and/or the wiring could be the issue. You can check + clean all the connections to the VR as a first step. This might solve the overcharge issue, if you have it. A voltage drop test at the VR is another good test.

J90ELECM 1998 this is the model #.. can anyone confirm my thinking that this has both a rectifier/regulator...?

i put a volt meter to the batt... it seemed pretty steady ( on the trailer) 14.54v up to 3,000 rpms... i only went to 3k quick however due to not being underload....as i started up and went form about 700rpms it started to climb..stayed at 13v for a min then went to 15-1600 rpms and showed 14.54v.....

IF my VR is bad.. is this a big job to change? do i just remove the cover on the front of the motor and just replace? or is there more too it?????

I couldn't find your exact model motor on the parts site, however, if that motor is a 60* V4, it should have a 20A voltage regulator. The VR would be behind the flywheel in the center of the block, under a plastic cover with 4 phillips head screws holding the cover on.

14.5 is fine, the unregulated versions go to 17 at times. But that doesn't mean its working correctly.

from having those motors I think the 60 degree motors are S and G( ie sl, sx gl, gx, )models...all others are crossflows.... I am pretty sure....they were intruders and fastracks, and ocean pros and ocean runners.

I found that model number:

well the cover looks like a 60 degree cover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..learning as i go here huh!!

so im still confused at what would cause 2 good batteries to boil over.. checked it again today.. they both started to boil after 5 mins of running, but the voltage was steady at 14.57v....??

when i say both, im saying i hooked one up and it boiled, they hooked another up and waited 5 mins and that one boiled...
