Here we go again guys. Put the boat in the water this morning to get a last fishing trip in before oil comes ashore. Started fine. put it in reverse to back away from dock and the gears ground a little but they caught. backed out and put it in forward. Gears ground a lot and loudly. Then they caught an I was off. about 30 minutes later after stopping to fish, started fine again. put in forward, gears did not catch. If it was a car, I'd say the transmission was slipping. Tried reverse and looks as though prop spins but not enough to move the boat. No spin on forward.
Took cowling off, looks the cables look as though they are moving the shift bar correctly, but after some research not sure if they are moving it enough. So, great purveyors of marine wisdom....what's your guess. Cables that have stretched? or looking around the forums it sounds like it may be a clutch dog? or maybe even a something spinning inside the prop?
My mechanic is out of pocket for a while working to clean up oil spill. Just trying to figure out if this is something I can handle myself or if I need to wait for him or find another mech.
As always, thanks in advance for the help and advice.
