98 Mercury 40HP ELPTO Drive Problem?

I have a question. I was on the lake today running my boat and the water was pretty choppy. I was going pretty much full speed and made a pretty sharp turn (not driving like a complete j@ck@$$, but having a little fun.) When I made the turn, I heard what sounded like the engine revving up (which I actually think was the boat popping out of gear). I dropped it down to neutral, then re-engaged it into forward drive. When I went to re-engage the drive, it would go, but only into an idle speed. If I tried to give it gas, the prop wouldn't spin past idle speed, it would just rev the engine. So the prop spins, but only when I engage it in idle speed, maxing the boat out at a whopping 2.8 mph. I know I didn't hit anything, because I was in 10 feet of water at the time. I'm praying that I didn't hose anything up too bad, but am unable to find anything on any forums to figure out what it may be.

Any idea what it could be?

Thanks!

Sounds to me like you spun your prop bearing.Hopefully that is it,A cheaper fix then doing lower unit work.Chack it out.Good luck.

Thanks for the quick response! I got a couple similar answers from buddies who have boats and found the symptoms to match a 'spun hub' problem. I'll be taking the prop off this weekend, so I'll let you know what I find!

Thanks again!

Got the prop re-hubbed for 35 bucks at a local prop repair shop. Part number is 43676T .

Thanks!
