'98 Yamaha 115 - How do I know if it is running too rich?

When I run my '98 yamaha 115 2-stroke in the driveway, it smokes quite a bit at startup but then gets better after it warms up. I can also see a gas-sheen in the water on the driveway when it's running on muffs and I've been wondering if it's running too rich. I'd rather it ran too rich than too lean but I want to make sure it's correct. Is there a sequence for the correct mixture?

Thanks for your help.

I like it when my 115 hp Yammie smokes upon start up. It means the engine's getting oil.

First question is what do the spark plugs look like? Wet? They should be a light brown or almost gray in color and dry.

To adjust the carburetor, turn the idle mixture screw until it lightly seats. Then, back it out 1 7/8 to 2 3/8 turns. Start the engine and warm it up in gear.

Slowly turn each idle mixture screw to the left (counterclockwise) 1/8 turn at a time until the engine starts to load up (stumbling or running a little rough.) Then turn the screw 1/16 turn at a time until the engine fires evenly and rpm increases.

Rapidly open and close the throttle. If the engine hesitates during acceleration, turn the idle adjustment screw a little to the right (clockwise) until acceleration is smooth.

After adjusting, you may need to adjust the idle speed to 700-800 rpm's.

Do you do both carb adjustments at the same time?
