The tilt and trim on my motor has been making a growling noise when the tilt gets in certain positions. I haven't done anything with this unit before so I thought I would start with the fluid check / fill. Is the procedure just to tilt it up, unscrew the fill screw, fill it up and screw it back in? Do I have to worry about bleeding it or anything else?

I saw in my manual it recommends Dexron II ATF. I have Dexron III ATF. Can I use that or does it have to be II?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, the procedure is to fully raise the motor, add as much Dexron III (II is no longer readily available) as she will take and replace the cap. Run the motor fully down then all the way back up. Add more fluid if needed. Repeat until it won't take more fluid.

See if the growling goes away, or not. If not something probably is wrong internally.

growling noise may be the trim rods need a little grease on the ends where they hit and push against the motor or the tilt tube pivot points need greasing

OK, so I pulled the fill plug and was able to put some tilt & trim fluid in. Not a lot. I tilted the motor up and down and when I pulled the fill plug out again and some of the fluid came out. When this happened, I noticed there were quite a few air bubbles in the fluid. The good news is that the growling noise is pretty much gone. BUT... on closer inspection, it appears that where the ram comes out of the top of the piston, there is a rubber o-ring or rubber gasket and it looks crooked. I can also see fluid coming out of it. What kind of grief am I in for now? I don't see anything in my manual about possibly replacing that rubber gasket or o-ring.

Thanks
