I have a 98 225 EFI yamaha in great shape bought it used three years ago. A few weeks ago I noticed a strange ticking noise? Today I was doing some gen maintenance , To my disbelief the noise was very pronounced with the cover off. I think its coming from the # 4 cylinder area. Could this be a Piston Pin???? as my heart droped to the floor....Its a lite ticking , def not a rod bearing sound. The motor still runs good except for the normal rough low rpm stuff.
help!!!!!!!

Re: 98 Yamaha 225 EFI, Ticking?

i have seen a lot of gudgeon trouble in motors used for skiing/towing. lately though they have been around the 95/96 model years. just coincidence though, take it to your yamaha mechanic and ask their advice.
a way to check your self....
take all your plugs out, get a piece of dowel that will fit in the plug hole. rotate each piston over top dead center to about half way down, then push on the piston top with the dowel, you shouldnt feel any movement. if you feel the piston push down slightly test it a few times to be sure. if it is this problem and you catch it now you wont have to replace much more then pistons and bearings. good luck.

hello
the 02 sensor draw tube has a tendancy to clog and will start moving in the holder creating a distint clacking sound. when was the last o2 sensor maint?
good luck and keep posting.
ps when inspecting the draw tube look for shiney ends that indicate movement
