Just got a 98 XL1200 and I think it needs timing/carb adjustment. I am unsure how to do either. The ski did sit in storage for a few years. I changed battery, plugs, and wires. It idles rough (like is has a high lope cam) and smells like it is burning rich. Thanks in advance for your help.

No added thoughts? Dealer said it would be a minimum of $500. I laughed. Is there any timing adustment? Please advise. Or is there a shadetree guy in NW Indiana that is willing to be paid?

Re: 98 Yamaha XL1200

I had the eaxct same problem, took the ski to yamaha, because the carbs runing rich, they rebuilt the carbs, still have the same issue, I pulled the motor turns out that the rear main seal was shot, and ther were 2 cracks in the block, thus sucking air into the block and creating back pressure pushing fuel back up into the throats of the carbs, my solution, I purchased a new rebuilt XL1200 motor from Advance Engine Machining, Long Island NY ,iinstalled it , and Im back on the water again, pulling the motor on this ski is tough, so get the instructions from the SBT site in order to get a idea of what your into, good luck,John

check the compression and the oil injection lines,, forget about timing,, it may need the carbs rebuilt or the power valves cleaned,,
