!985 40 HP evinrude Shift cable ?

Does it make a difference if my shift cable is for a 19 ft boat and I have a 17 ft boat ?<br /> <br />Im having problems getting to full speed it seems like it is going to but the shifter is not going no further. The motor is running tip top I am stumped can any one help ?

Shouldn't make a difference if adjusted properly, but as Hooty said, your post is a bit confusing.. You may need to adjust the trunnion nut at the motor correctly to compensate for the throttle position.

Hello, I am sorry I was a bit confusing. Maybe its because I am a female. I will try again! It souds like when I put the shifter all the way forward that I am going to get full throttle and then in just doesn't seem to engage, it seems to drop back after it revs for a second. It also seems to have more power when I want to go in reverse? I am so confused.

With the motor stopped, try to remove the hood and have a helper to move throttle lever in boat. Remember to turn the propeller by hand untill it catches gear. Ignition OFF !!!. Watch movement on throttle/gear lever on side of motor. Some movement can be adjusted on the little screw, but be sure you are correct in neutral. Maybe only throttle cable needs adjustment. I think your cable is either defective on not properly fittet on motor. Male/female doesnt matter here, but a lot elsewhere

I had someone come and adjust the cable and it is now in the correct position. (I am still having the same problem as above)Could there be any other possible causes for me not getting on plane with it in full throttle position?
