!986 85hp Force won't Idle with Cover on

I have an 1986 Bayliner Capri with 85 hp Force outboard. It runs good at full speed but won't idle or godd into gear slowly without killing when the motor cover is on. Without the cover it runs great.
I thought maybe it was sparking through the cover so I taped off the plugs and also tryed to adjust the idle but it did not help.
Any suugestions would be appreciated.

Check the exhaust boot for leaks. Sounds like exhaust is choking the engine.

Thanks for the help! I think your right on with the exhaust boot. I removed the old one and you can see where the exhaust has blackend the motor. I ordered a new exhaust boot kit. It only came with the rubber boot and spring.

On the old boot there was a plastic piece with two (sorry not knowing the correct name) prongs. It looks like a plastic gasket and is melted away. How do I find this piece? It fits inside the boot and the spring presses it against the motor.

Can I use some high degree gasket seal and the old part? Be nice to float the boat soon!

You don't need that plastic part. Just use a good hose clamp on the motor side and some RTV on beveled cover side if you want. It doesn't need to be high temp.

Had the boat out on Fathers Day and it ran like a champ. Thanks for the advice it worked great! Fixed everything for $22.00 including shipping. Would not have figured it out without your help!
