99 115 johnson old gas cranking

boat had sat 5+ years, will crank when i pump bulb with a valve open near the fuel pump( i think) then close it and it'll crank up for about ten seconds and die,,, what is the best way to check fuel pump? do you put a gauge on the valve stem near the fuel pump(i think) and is there a certain pressure reading you should get with the starter turning over?
any help appreciated

See the faq files for fuel pump pressure test, look in the top secret file.
I would buy the factory service book from a dealership, you have to order it, the seloc and clymer aren't usefull at all.
The red lever on the primer solenoid should point to the bottom of the solenoid for running.
