Hey guys, Got a 1999 Force 120. When running at anything above 4800 rpms, should I trim the engine up, after about 30 seconds running fine, it starts to slow down. Anything under 4200 rpms I can trim but over I get this issue. If I start trimming it back down the engine recovers and comes back to speed. I have a trim guage, I am not trimming it up alot, just to the first mark up. It would be at like 1/4 tank mark if it was a up/down fuel guage.

I just bought this boat, engine ran fine and I never trimmed it up. After 2 months I played with the trim and found this issue. Engine beine 10 years old is in excellent condidtion but things start wearing out as would be expected. Recently, had issues with a leaking carb, found the needles worn and the fuel line deteriorating. Pulled the bowls, sprayed the passage ways, replaced the needles. Found the fuel lines from the tank to the engine deteriorating internally so replaced it with a 12ft universal line and bulb. Cut off the excess and used it to replace the short line inside the engine cowl from the connector to the fuel pump, then used auto fuel line to replace from the fuel pump to the carbs. When I pulled the quick disconnects to use them with my new line I found them just packed full of the fuel line interior liner! Anyway, cleaned them all out, blowed air thru them etc and also cleaned out the fuel tanks. So basically all the fuel lines replaced, cleaned connectors and new needles. Didn't replace the fuel pump diaphram although I have one but replaced the fuel filter after it incase there was a bit of liner still in there. So, engine runs perfect as when I purchased the boat, idles perfect, needles seat so carb doesn't leak, runs at 5250 WOT but still baffeled why the engine doesn't want to run trimmed up at more than 3/4 throttle? Any Ideas?? Boat is a 24ft Pontoon rated for a 120hp.

perhaps as you are trimming up, the throttle cable is binding and pulling somewhere, causing it to close the throttle part way from wot. ??

That's one of those problems you need to see.Is the guage marked right? Are you trimming it up past the cavitation point?
Is the motor mounted right. It could be too high on the transom.J

Didn't get a chance to even look at it today till tonight. Engine trimmed down is leaning slightly back. Water line is about 2/3rds down on the square grilled side panel on the leg? Trimmed to where it starts its issues the water line is just below the side square cover, would that be too low? just above the anode and level across, engine looks level or slightly leaning fwd, very slightly. Trim guage readings are correct. Looking at the transom, it can only come down maybe an inch. I will pull the cowl, and trim it up while looking at the throttle cable but also gonna go out and test it and when it acts up spray some fuel in the carbs and see if its lack of fuel. I can say one thing for sure, its definately not caviating when it does this. Like it isn't a big deal, its a frigging pontoon boat, runs perfect trimmed down, hauls with a 120hp on a 24 ft and I can trim up just not above 70% which is weird. Only thing I can think of is improper fuel float setting or lack of fuel, Gonna also look at the fuel filter and see if it goes low or dry when it does this.

when is the last time you services your fuel system? tank breathers, filters, fuel pump, etc. When auto engines have these symptons it is usually related to the engine requesting more fuel than the pump can deliver. It could be caused by weak pump, clogged filter, or vacum lock.

Re: 99 120 Force slows when trimmed up

I just redid the whole fuel system. New lines, flushed and cleaned the fuel tanks and replaced the worn float bowl needles and filter. The fuel pump diaphram is old, think its the opriginal which makes it just over 10 years old, not sure. Might have been damaged with all the fuel line deterioration than ran thru it BUT it runs fine trimmed down at WOT. In any event, I replaced the whole fuel delivery system, got a new diaphram so I will replace that. Only thing I can think of is maybe the previous owner messed with the float setting. Does anyone know the dimensions for the float bowl should stop at when its at top? This way I can check that.

It would be very RARE that the floats will be adjusted wrong. You actually set them empty and right side up.The float should be hanging down just short of touching the body(no way to send pic to you)Then turn over:float should be flat:to adjust that adjust the needle tab.
You need to take pics of the boat in the water just setting. Then take pics of it moving on plane. Then pics as you trim up.J
