99' 150 Ocean Pro Idle probs

First, I am new to this board and found it out of desperation.

I have a 1999 150 Johnson Ocean Pro. It starts fine at the ramp. Runs great until I shut it down for a 1/2 hour or more - after the engine has run for 30 minutues or longer (hot condition). It starts rough and idles poorly after that, stalling, sputtering and "missing" - kind of a like a sneeze. I know it is gasping for fuel. Sometimes when we accelerate it will stall when the motor is put under load. Other times it will idle fine at 650 RPM, then around 1,000 RPM it sputters and stalls.

I bought the boat used from a Grady White Dealer and it had impecable maintenance records. I had a compression test done it prior to purchasing the boat. It all checked out. I had the power pack replaced, new plugs (none where fouled), new fuel filter, fuel/water separator filter replaced. Recently we had the boat for this problem at an OMC/Bombardier factory authorized warrenty center and they too could find nothing wrong, except they adjusted the the carb throttle linkage.

I have a 60 gallon tank in the boat and changed up fuels and grades. I have added fuel additives to reduce gas line freeze (water in the gas), clean the jets and so forth. I typically use the boat once or twice a week for extended periods of time. I can burn 60 to 90 gallons of fuel in a weekend.

I reserached the posts on this site and found a couple messages that are similar, but the not the same. I apologize if somebody recently answered a similar post. So please indulge my request for insight to the problem. I would appreciate any ideas that you may have.

Thanks

GradyBob, welcome to the board.
One item that caught my eye in your post was the fuel additive for water.....I will assume this is the non-alchohol variety.
The symptoms you list lead me to fuel starvation, and in particular, injector problems.
This system is a bit newer than I'm used to dealing with, but there are several techs here that will be replying to your post, and answer accordingly.
Good luck, I wish I could help more, but the Guru's of the newer engines can give ya a better idea as to where to look, so hang tight! :)

GradyBob....I agree with walleyehed about the fuel starvation problem, but since a 99 Johnson 150 isn't injected I would say you don't have to worry about injector problems. I would inquire about how long it's been since the carbs were cleaned and rebuilt though, maybe you can search back in those records or ask the dealer you bought it from, you may just want to do it to be on the safe side.

Also you mentioned that you upgraded the fuel you use, if this means that you changed to a higher octane, well that won't really help anything out, all you need is an 87 octane fuel, most outboards are designed to run on it, higher octanes with added alcohol can actually be worse and do damage to your engine over time. Good Luck.

What spark plugs are you using?

Double ditto on the 87 octane only!

Thanks everyone for the insight. The fuel additive was for marine-outboard application. The plugs are Champion 87Y something or the other - I have spares in the boat, but don't have the number memorized. I used the the recommended ones found in the original owner's manual that came with the boat.

There is no evidence that the carborators have been rebuilt. Perhaps the direction we head.

I will use the 87 octane fuel.

What puzzels me is that if the carbs were fouled, then would start up not be a problem also? This problem exists primarily after I have run the motor for over 30 minutes and stop for about the same amount of time. Do these motor's suffer from vapor lock?

I noticed when the engine is choked as it sputters, it temporarily relieves the problem, but it ultimately stalls out.

Still, if others have any insight on this, please let me know.

Thanks again.
