I recently purchased (off of ebay) a 1999 Mercury Outboard (tiller handle) 25 Hp, 2-stroke, serial number OG767129. The power head, I discovered was cracked and had to be replaced. I did the rebuild myself, replacing the impeller, thermastat, and all gaskets. I thought I had everthing put back together correctly and took the motor out on it's rebuilt voyage a week ago. Except for a high idle and reversed shift cables, it ran fine. I took it out two other times and everthing seemed to be okay.
Yesterday afternoon, I took it out again, the reverse worked fine as I got the boat off of the trailer. After I ran at full throttle forward and shutting the engine off, I started it up again and discovered I had no reverse. No matter what I did it would not go into reverse. I managed to get the boat back on the trailer and returned home. I checked the cables and everthing seemed to be okay, but still no reverse. I did notice that the gears if turned to full forward appear to reach a maximum revolution and even appear to jump a tooth.
I then removed the two plastic gears and attempted to shift the lower unit with a 1/2 wrench. Still unable to go into reverse. It is as if the mechanism is locked.
I did notice at then end of the rebuild that I had 2 small washers remaining. I cross checked the blown up views from an online marine dealer but could not find anything missing.
I have read through the forum and noticed that other people have had similar problems. One noted a missing washer in the upper shift linkage but again I can not locate where it could be.
If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. I have enough mechanical knowledge to rebuild the engine and get things running but I could use help with the shift linkage.
Thanks
