Hey guys!

Running a 16ft xpress side console bass boat. Have a 1999 2 stroke 25 hp Mercury on the back. Took it out last weekend w/ 2 friends (wanted to try out the new dolphin fin). All of us were in the back then we moved around to get on plane and ran for a few mins. We stopped and I went to adjust the tilt bar on the motor and saw steam coming from the mid section of the outboard where the exhaust section is. The mid section was very hot to the touch. Everything else seemed fine, tell tale was working. Power head seemed okay, no wires melted.

Took the boat out again the next day, just by myself. Ran it for a few mins check to see if the mid section was overly hot - it was just warm. Is it normal for the mid section to become warm ( i would expect so from "exhaust", just never really paid attention to it).

Thanks, and will post pics if need be.

Yes the mid section getting warm is common, as long as the telltale is flowing and the powerhead is not hot your good.

Took the boat out again w/ the family. That mid section is still getting hot to the touch. Its even hot under the exhaust port. Also noticed the coloring is different in the mid section comparing it to the lower unit. Any change of some ball bearings or something else causing this issue? Tell tale is working normal. No trouble starting it up.

Thanks in advanced

There are no bearings in the mid section is is a big open exhsut tube. You may have a thermostat sticking a bit and I would probably repace it to be safe.
