I am looking to purchase a 99' Polar and it comes with a 99' Yamahan 60hp 2-stroke. I did a water test with the owner on Saturday and it ran very good. The owner said that he hasn't had any real trouble with it except that he does have to frequently take the carbs off and clean them becuase he runs into situation where the motor will run well on the muffs, but won't run out on the water. He said once he cleans them, then he's good to go. He also said that he now will unplug the gas line when flushing it out and let it run out of gas to prevent any gas sitting in the carbs. He states that since he's been doing that, he hasn't had any trouble with it.

I was just looking to see if anyone here can give me advice and if there's anything else I need to look at?

Thanks!

Install a fuel/water separater type canister filter(Walmart/Attwood $27) on the transom, drain the carbs with drain plugs in bottom/side of each carb float chamber...does a much better job of removing gas/water/debris from float chamber than "running motor out of gas". Use a fuel stabilizer like Stabil or Seafoam all the time, more when you're laying up motor for several weeks or months. Mine is a 1999 90HP Yamaha and carbs have never been off/cleaned, etc....no problems at all, so far...

Thanks for the information. I'll make sure to install a separator along with the stabil as soon as I get it.

Are you aware of what it would take to install a temp gauge as well? It currently only has a gas gauge, but I'd like to install a temp, possibly even RPM gauge as well.

The separater is simple to install and is a great preventive maintenance item. A tachometer is great to monitor your boat's performance and best efficiency. Google: Yamaha Outboard Performance Bulletins for great information about RPM's, MPH, GPH, etc. for your boat and motor. I don't know much about temperature guages, but it couldn't hurt to have one. Also, a depth finder/fish finder is a great item to have, especially if you're running in rivers where depth is marginal or questionable...could save you a prop or lower unit!
